Originally from upstate New York, Sparkman said she is excited to return to the area after several years of teaching downstate.

Sparkman said she is also enthusiastic about working with the Career and Technical Education program.

“I am from upstate originally, and taught upstate, but for the past five years I was working in a school in the South Bronx, so it’s been about returning to my roots up here and learning as much as possible about the Career and Technical Education programs so I can be ready to go as soon as students arrive.”

Sparkman said she is in awe of the programs provided by Career and Technical Education, and noted that the exposure and training students receive will help prepare them to work effectively in the industry of their choice.

“That’s the key, this is all about student choice,” Sparkman said. “For many kids it’s what will motivate them to continue working through challenges they may face.”

Additionally, Sparkman said the Career and Technical Education programs help keep talented students in the communities that raised them.

“These are the kids that will be building our houses, repairing our cars, monitoring our health, cutting our hair and providing various other services to our communities for years to come,” Sparkman said.

Sparkman said her goal is to prepare students for life after high school, and said she wants to show students that it is safe for them to dream and give them the tools they need to make their dreams a reality.

“When students graduate they should leave our doors with the skills they need to make it in this world,” Sparkman said. “It is on all of us to make sure that happens.”

Sparkman has obtained several academic degrees, including two bachelor’s degrees from SUNY Oswego, a master’s degree in adolescent teaching with a concentration in history from Ithaca College and a master’s degree in school administration and supervision from Hunter College.
