OSWEGO, NY—Davis Cleaning Service, LLC (DCS), a woman-owned business specializing in commercial janitorial services, has relocated to Walgate Commons from the Oswego County Business Expansion Center (BEC), both in the city of Oswego.

Owner Anne Davis began operating DCS out of her garage in 2002 with one commercial account. By 2005, Davis’ daughters Niki Hilton and Julie Anne Winklestine became partners in the business which had grown to include several clients and a need for more space.

“As we built our customer base and diversified our services, we found that we really needed to relocate to a larger space where we could store our equipment. The BEC was a great place for us to grow our business because we could have a space to house our equipment and set up a small office with affordable rent and a convenient location,” Davis said.

The BEC is owned and managed by Operation Oswego County (OOC), Oswego County’s designated economic development organization. The facility offers affordable rental space for fledgling non-retail, industrial and service businesses designed to help them achieve significant growth and development during the first few years of business with the intention of eventually moving out of the building and into private commercial space. The building is wired for computer and telephone network capabilities and consists of about 10,000 square feet of office space, 9,000 square feet of manufacturing space and a shipping/receiving dock. In addition to the BEC, OOC also operates another small business incubator, the Start-Up Facility, in the Oswego County Industrial Park in the town of Schroeppel. The 10,000 square foot building has three receiving docks, and is located immediately off state Route 481, exit 14.

According to Davis, the company has doubled its business over the past two years and now employs 20 full and part-time employees. DCS now provides cleaning services for more than 55 commercial buildings on a regular basis and more than 50 on an occasional basis throughout Oswego, Onondaga and Jefferson Counties. DCS also services accounts in Binghamton, Albany and Pennsylvania.

Services offered now include commercial cleaning for office, industrial, medical and banking facilities, carpet cleaning, rest room sanitation, construction clean-up, special event service, home and apartment move-outs, emergency cleaning and floor maintenance. The company also provides residential cleaning services and specialty services such as painting, upholstery repair and other minor maintenance repairs.

Expansion plans include the addition of a new bathrooms-only cleaning service for residential and commercial customers.

“There are a lot of people that are interested in only having their bathrooms cleaned either because this is not a favorite task, or that’s all they need done on a regular basis. This is truly a niche business that we’ve discovered has great growth potential,” Davis said.

“We are now leasing a space at Walgate Commons that accommodates our increased need to do laundry, store more equipment and has parking just for the business vehicles. It is also easier for us to load and unload equipment,” she said.

DCS is also hoping to increase its staff in order to accommodate its growing business.

“We are looking for ambitious, flexible and, most of all, dependable people that are available nights and weekends. We offer healthcare and other benefits and will train new employees,” Davis said.

“Davis Cleaning Service’s success is an example of the incubator facilities operating the way they are designed to,” said L. Michael Treadwell, CEcD, executive director of OOC. “The goal of the incubators is to help businesses grow during the first few years of business and then move into private commercial space. It’s especially positive that this company remained in Oswego County and we wish them continued success.”
