OSWEGO, NY – As we have all read in the news or heard on the TV, obesity is an ever-increasing problem in our country. Even more frightening is the news that obesity in children is on the increase with 1 out of every 3 children classified as overweight.

Children face many social, emotional and health consequences as a result of being overweight.

And, it is now believed by medical experts that children will be unhealthier adults than their parents are now.

Although there is no magic bullet to cure this problem, most experts believe that an improved diet and regular physical exercise will lead to healthier children.

For the past year, the Oswego YMCA has worked hard to create a family center at the Y.

There are activity programs for everyone, infants through senior citizens. There are swim programs, gymnastics, youth sport leagues, strength training programs for teens, a youth fitness arcade and youth centers on the east and west sides of the city.

For adults there are various exercise and yoga classes, Pilates, dance, weight training, biking, swimming, and fitness centers with the latest equipment. Additionally, there are Respite programs and special events. The Y has truly become a community center for all of Oswego.

This Saturday, Sept. 27, there will be a day full of activities at the Y from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

All activities are free of charge and everyone will be able to see what the Y has to offer.

Beginning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., there will also be membership drawings, giveaways and refreshments.

For all who attend, there will be guest passes to try out various classes. Additionally, there will be tours of the Y facilities, free childcare (1-3 p.m.), and open gym.

The Institute of Medicine stated: “Preventing childhood obesity is a collective responsibility…the key will be to implement changes from many directions and at multiple levels.”

We can start by involving the entire family.

On Saturday, see what the Oswego Y can do to help your family begin their trek toward a healthier living style. missing or outdated ad config
