Community Comes Together to Celebrate Recovery and Raise Awareness for Substance Use in the Oswego County

OSWEGO COUNTY –  In April, community members joined hands to commemorate individuals in recovery and to shed light on substance use issues in the Oswego Community. This Anti-Stigma Event hosted by Friends of Recovery Oswego County and OCO Clubhouse, marked a significant step towards fostering understanding, support, and hope for those on the path to recovery.

The event, which took place at the McCrobie Building, saw a diverse turnout of individuals from various walks of life, all united in their commitment to supporting the recovery journey. Attendees were encouraged to explore tables set up by a multitude of local agencies offering essential services and support to individuals in recovery, showcasing the robust network of resources available within the community.

A highlight of the evening was a compelling panel discussion featuring representatives who shared personal stories and insights into the profound impacts of stigma on individuals in recovery. The panelists recounted their own experiences overcoming challenges, highlighting the transformative power of recovery in their lives. Audience members actively engaged in the discussion, posing thoughtful questions about substance use and its ripple effects on the community.

In a creative twist, the event concluded with attendees participating in the selection of a new t-shirt design aimed at celebrating the journey of recovery. Designed by youth and members from the community, the vibrant designs captured the spirit of recovery, resilience and hope. The winning design will soon be unveiled to the public, serving as a tangible symbol of solidarity and support for individuals in recovery. This event was made possible by funding from the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services.

The winning T-Shirt, designed by Gabrielle Welsh, will be illustrated on Grey T-Shirts. The message is “Recovery is Growth.” T-shirts will be available at our upcoming events to further amplify our message. Recovery is Growth, come grow with us.
