ELMIRA, NY — The Elmira College Office of Career Services recently hosted the second annual Excellence in Community Service Luncheon. The event, in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, highlighted the importance of students volunteering and giving back to the local community.
Natasha R. Thompson, president and chief executive officer at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Elmira, was the featured guest speaker and was joined by community partners from the American Red Cross, Compeer, The ARC of Chemung, Kiwanis International, and Community Arts of Elmira.
The event concluded with students being recognized for their exceptional service and impact on several local organizations including Bargain Hut, Economic Opportunity Program, Habitat for Humanity, Community Arts, American Red Cross, Rotaract, Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Circle K/ Kiwanis International, Arnot Health, Compeer, ARC of Chemung, Chemung County SPCA, North Presbyterian Church, and the Chemung County Library District.

“Community Service is such a rich tradition here at Elmira College, and it was great to be joined by our community partners to recognize a group of students who continue to give back to the City of Elmira,” said Julie Fielding, director of Career Services at Elmira College.
Elmira College is a private, coeducational, Phi Beta Kappa college founded in 1855, located in Elmira.
The college has an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 1,200 full-time mostly-residential students, and is the guardian of Quarry Farm where Mark Twain wrote many of his most iconic novels and is today a research center for visiting Twain scholars.
The college has been ranked as a Best College in the Northeast by The Princeton Review and a Top Tier national liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report, which also ranked Elmira College as a leading college, nationally, for student internships.
