Oswego Salvation Army Captain Kenneth Hayes; Advisory Board member, Mercedes Neiss; Vona’s owner, Joey Occhino; Advisory Board chairman, Paul Santore; and Vona’s staff members Lesa Peterson and Melanie Groff recently met to plan a lasagna dinner that will raise funds to support the local work of The Salvation Army.

Joey Occhino, owner of Vona’s Restaurant in Oswego, will be providing the next Guest Chef Dinner at the Oswego Salvation Army on Tuesday, December 13, serving from 4:30 to 6:30 P.M., for dining in or taking out, at the Citadel, 73 West Second Street, Oswego. The dinners have been moved to Tuesday evenings to improve the parking situation for guests.

Occhino will be preparing her “best in town” lasagna, using her mother’s family recipe for the favorite dish. It will be served with tossed salad, bread, assorted desserts, and beverages. Vona’s Restaurant was started by Occhino’s parents, Tom and Mary Vona, in 1946, and has been helping to satisfy the community’s taste for Italian foods for the past 65 years.

The Guest Chef dinners are organized by the Advisory Board and offered to everyone in the community to help support the services of The Salvation Army in Oswego.

Seventy-five to 150 people daily receive hot breakfasts and lunches seven days a week from our kitchen. About 80 to 150 families each month receive a three-day supply of groceries from our pantry and bread and pastries are distributed to at least 750 people each month. A fresh food distribution occurs monthly through the Food Bank of Central NY. About 30 students come to our building weekly after school to do homework, use computers, and participate in crafts and games.

Our classrooms accommodate a Life Skills Training Program that addresses financial literacy; job-search skills; parenting skills; selection, purchase, preparation, and storage of food; health information; and other basic skills needed for a better life. Cornell Cooperative Extension provides instructors for this aspect of our programming. Activity rooms accommodate exercise equipment and games that foster fellowship and develop social skills in our clients.

If you would like to know more or offer your services as a volunteer call 343-6491 or stop at the office at 73 West Second Street, Oswego. There are opportunities for individuals, families, and organizations to stand with the Salvation Army kettles until Christmas.
