Dennis M. Kenney Middle School Eighth Graders Dive into Environmental Learning at Rice Creek Field Station

Dennis M. Kenney Middle School eighth graders explore water samples and organisms.

OSWEGO COUNTY – Eighth graders from Dr. Christine Lamont’s class at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School recently took their learning beyond the classroom walls during a hands-on field experience at Rice Creek Field Station.

The event invited students to explore the local ecosystem through interactive, science-based activities. Guided by Dr. Lamont and environmental educators, students studied regional waterways, examined water quality, and learned about the vital connections between local habitats and broader environmental systems.

“Taking students out into the field gives them a powerful, real-world context for what they learn in class,” said Dr. Lamont. “This experience helps them see the direct impact of human activity on water quality and environmental health. It’s an unforgettable day that inspires curiosity and stewardship.”

Throughout the day, students collected and tested water samples, recorded data, and analyzed their findings — strengthening both their scientific skills and their appreciation for local natural resources.
