Director Holds Auditions For First CNY Arts Center 2018 Production

FULTON – CNY Arts Center announces auditions for the first play of the 2018 season, The Curious Savage, directed by Dana Thomas.

Auditions for the entertaining comedy written by John Patrick will be held November 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., November 13 and 14 from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

The production is slated to run February 9-18, 2018, at the Arts Center, 11 River Glen Drive on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus.

The story synopsis as told through special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service reveals Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of her grownup stepchildren’s efforts to get their hands on it.

Knowing that the widow’s wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of the fortune, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium hoping to “bring her to her senses.”

In the sanatorium Mrs. Savage meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life.

The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she maintains control and leads them on a merry chase.

At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams.

The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems at times motivated only by greed and dishonesty.

As part of the Arts Center Mentoring program, Dana J. Thomas will debut as the director of the season opener, under the guidance of producer Nancy Fox.

“We are delighted to have opportunities for new directors to take on challenges under the mentorship of seasoned directors,” said Fox. “Dana has been seen onstage in several Arts Center productions and recently moved into learning the skill and challenge of Stage Management on Bye Bye Birdie. Coupled with her college and local theatre experiences, this is a natural next step for Dana.”

Last year’s new director Jessie Dobrzynski scored well with Twelve Angry Men and garnered four SALT award nominations through her efforts as a new director.

The first two rounds of auditions will be held at the Arts Center theatre on the Cayuga College Fulton Campus at 11 River Glen Drive. The third and final round, November 14, plus any callbacks, will held at the Arts Center HotSpot at 47 S. First St., Fulton.
