Fifth-grade students at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School built and raced hovercrafts during a visit from the Hovercraft Project, according to an October 15, 2026, news release from the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation.
The hands-on activity brought science, technology, engineering and mathematics to life. Students worked together to build their own hovercrafts before testing their creations in races with one another. Staff members also joined the racing at the end of the lesson, traveling across the gym floor.
The experience gave students an opportunity to explore engineering concepts in an interactive setting and see the results of their work in action.
Beyond STEM learning, the project emphasized teamwork, communication, problem-solving and perseverance. Students collaborated throughout the building process, worked through challenges and encouraged one another as they prepared to race.
“The visit provided a memorable combination of learning and fun,” said EJD Principal Brett Doody. “It just goes to show you that some of the most meaningful educational experiences happen when students have the opportunity to build, experiment and learn by doing. We are so grateful to provide learning opportunities like this to our students.”
