OSWEGO – The Oswego County Legislature designated April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month to improve understanding, change behaviors, challenge victim-blaming attitudes, respect personal boundaries, and practice healthy communication with children.
Sexual violence is widespread and impacts entire communities.
Estimates show that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before they turn 18.
In 2017, Oswego County Opportunities’ Services to Aid Families, the domestic violence and rape crisis program in Oswego County, served more than 500 victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
Yet, this remains the most under-reported crime as many people face various barriers in coming forward.
Community members are encouraged use their voices and stand up against sexual violence.

Representatives from SAF were at hand to receive the proclamation from the Oswego County Legislature’s Human Services Committee.
