Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County, in partnership with Head Start Center Fort Ontario, Pinewood Head Start Center, and Pulaski Early Learning Center, is proud to announce the early success of its new family literacy program. Children and parents attended the FAB program on Wednesday, July 8th, and left with smiles and a free book. Interactive sessions were held to teach parents about the importance of choosing age appropriate books and to enrich the children’s understanding of the book that was read through crafts and activities.

Similar to the FAB program, the Adult Literacy League Family Literacy Program claims, “The single most important factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school.” Jane Murphy, Executive Director of LVOC declares, “Reading is an important skill that children will carry with them throughout their lives. With the FAB program, parents become their child’s first and most valuable teacher.”

Meetings are held once a week from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., starting July 7th and continuing through August 13th. Meeting locations are as follows:

• Fulton (Tuesdays) – Pinewood Head Start Center
• Oswego (Wednesdays) – Head Start Center Fort Ontario
• Pulaski (Thursdays) – Pulaski Day Care Center

Although this six-week program has already begun, there is still space available. It is not too late to join in on the fun and learning.

Preschoolers through first graders and their families are welcome. Play an active role in your child’s education by becoming their first teacher! For information about our program or to register for any of the locations, call the LVOC office at 342-8839.
