Family And Books Wraps Up A Successful Summer Program

The Family and Books project was a winner for both the children and parents. Preschoolers through first graders and their families attended the sessions in Oswego, Fulton and Pulaski. “The summer program was a great way for parents and children to spend some quality time together as well as getting the children prepared for the upcoming school year “ stated Chena Tucker, the Americorp member and FAB coordinator.

The Family and Books project is geared to strengthen parents’ support of their children’s literacy development and early school success and is intended to encourage and improve parent participation in the child’s education. The Family and Books (FAB) was a pilot project hosted by the Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County and funded by a grant from Dollar General.

“My children thoroughly enjoyed this program, my son (who is four) has learned more and more each week. I hope you will continue this program in the future. Thank you again” says Nicole Sams a parent participant of the FAB program.

Literacy Volunteers of Oswego County’s mission is to improve literacy skills throughout Oswego County by providing free, confidential tutoring to adults wishing to develop the English communication and literacy skills they need to reach their full potential as individuals, parents, workers and citizens.

Adult Reading Center, Inc. believes “Adult literacy impacts the entire family.

So, by teaching parents to read and the importance of education, we are giving their children an excellent role model and, hopefully, a future that will include life long learning.”
