OSWEGO – Fort Ontario State Historic Site welcomes volunteers to join “I Love My Park Day” on Saturday, May 6. Part of more than 100 cleanup, improvement and beautification events happening statewide, the event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the fort located at 1 E. Fourth St., Oswego.

“I Love My Park Day” is a statewide event aimed at improving and enhancing New York’s state parks and historic sites and bringing visibility to the entire state park system and its needs. Volunteers clean up park lands and beaches, plant trees and gardens, restore trails and wildlife habitat, remove invasive species and work on various site improvement projects.

The event at Fort Ontario has projects for all ages, such as raking, sweeping, gardening, window washing and painting. Registration is not required but does help Fort Ontario for planning purposes. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, rakes and shovels.

“I Love My Park Day” is coordinated at the statewide level by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

‘Friends’ groups and park staff oversee cleanup, improvement and beautification projects and work with volunteers. Their work is essential in keeping parks beautiful, clean and welcoming for all to visit and enjoy.

Fort Ontario is one of 35 historic sites around New York State. The first fort was built in 1755 and the site has had a colorful history in the 268 years since. It served as a military hospital and was the site of the only refugee shelter in the United States during World War II.

Those interested in volunteering in the event at Fort Ontario State Historic Site can register to volunteer by visiting www.ptny.org/ilovemypark or by calling Fort Ontario at 315-343-4711.
