Fulton Family YMCA Speed Demons Swimmers and Families Benefit From Grant Aimed At Healthy Living

Fulton Family YMCA Swim Team and Tyler Ahart, Oswego County Prevention Coalition

FULTON – A substantial grant from the Oswego County Prevention Coalition is supporting the healthy choices of more than four dozen Fulton-area youths this season. The Coalition provided a grant of $5,000 to the Fulton Family YMCA, which used the money to lower the cost to families of registering their children for the YMCA’s Speed Demons community swim team.

“Tyler Ahart, the Coalition’s Coordinator, was looking for a way to make a big impact on families and young people in our community. Our Speed Demons swim team is a perfect fit for the Coalition’s effort to support youth engagement in healthy and positive activities. We’re grateful to Tyler and the Coalition for this grant, which helped defray costs for 55 young swimmers. We look forward to flourishing this collaboration.” said Amy Leotta, Fulton Family YMCA Executive Director.

“The mission of the Oswego County Prevention Coalition is to ultimately reduce and prevent substance abuse in teens by supporting local organizations, businesses and clubs that offer resources for teen health. Keeping teens engaged in their communities and helping them find passion in improving their physical and mental health plays such a crucial role in how their lives will develop as they grow older. Supporting organizations such the YMCA is an essential part of what the Coalition is all about. The Coalition is proud to offer scholarships for students who wish to engage in these community programs in an to remove the pressure and financial burden from Oswego County families.” said Tyler Ahart, DFC Coalition Coordinator.

The Speed Demons is a community swim club open to young people ages 5 – 18 who live in the Fulton Family YMCA’s service area of Fulton, Phoenix, and Hannibal which competes in a league with teams from YMCAs throughout Central New York. Registration fees cover the cost of running the team, which includes the cost of renting the Granby Elementary School pool from the Fulton City School District for daily practices and meets. The team has had swimmers earn honors at national YMCA championships and many swimmers have had successful varsity and collegiate swim careers.

The Oswego County Prevention Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing drug and alcohol use among young people. The Coalition seeks to collaborate with other organizations to increase protective factors and decrease risk factors towards a sustainable, drug-free community that supports wellness and health.
