FULTON – Fulton native Allan Howe returns to perform with his band, Swing Set, 6:30 p.m., Aug. 2, as part of the TGIF Concert Series, it was announced by Steve Chirello, president, Fulton Music Association (FMA). All concerts are free and are at the Canal Landing gazebo, 56 S. First St. in downtown Fulton.
Oswego County Federal Credit Union, (OCFCU), is the major sponsor of the ‘TGIF Concert Series’ presented by the FMA and Fulton Parks and Recreation, with support from Fulton Savings Bank, Chirello said.
For their appearance in Fulton, Swing Set will consist of Howe on piano and vocals; Tom McClure (sax and vocals) from Geneva; and Rochester bassist Gary Cummings. “These three have performed together for over 20 years, “ Howe said, “Mostly in the Rochester and Finger Lake regions. Filling out the Aug. 2 concert roster is local percussionist, Joe Cortini.
“The group will perform many Swing-era tunes made popular by Frank Sinatra, Nat “King” Cole, Fulton’s own Mark Murphy, Duke Ellington, and more recently Nancy Kelly, Diana Krall, and Michael Bublé. We will, however, present a few things that are not Swing, but DO swing.”
Howe comes from a long line of Fulton musicians — Howes, Murphys, and Bidwells — and his mother Mary and grandmother were both longtime organists in the First Methodist church. “One cousin was nominated six times for an Emmy, and another was nominated with the band for which he plays bass.,” Howe said. “Many members of these families are currently touring and recording musicians, and those who are not, are musically active in their communities, with one presently in the Oswego’s Snowbelters barbershop group.”
Howe will be performing solo from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Towpath Towers on Wednesday, July 31.
Here’s the remaining TGIF Series schedule: Aug. 2, Allan Howe; Aug. 16, Drew Frech; Aug. 23, Joe Cortini & His Jazz Mafia; Aug. 30, Fulton Community Dixieland Band.
