Grand Opening of The Maples Assisted Living Facility in Fulton, New York

FULTON – The Maples Assisted Living Community, a new locally owned and operated 89-bed Assisted Living Residence in Fulton, NY held its official ribbon cutting earlier today, marking a significant milestone for the community and its senior residents.

The five-year long project began in 2019 with outfitting being completed in early 2024. Owners and equity partners are Atom Avery of Avery Rental Properties in Oswego, and Dr. Michael Stephens, a 20-year resident of Oswego and Associate Chief Medical Officer for Oswego Health.

“We are overwhelmed by the show of support today and proud to carry on a tradition of caring at this address,” Avery said. “Following the closure of Michaud Residential Health Services, our community experienced a loss, depriving our seniors of the compassionate care and warmth they rightfully deserve. Today’s ribbon-cutting represents our collective commitment to ensuring our elders thrive in an environment tailored to their needs.”

The Maples occupies the premises once held by Michaud Residential Health Services, a nonprofit nursing and short-stay rehabilitation facility that ceased operations in 2017. With a focus on promoting independence and well-being, the facility provides a range of services tailored to meet the unique needs of each resident. It will feature private or semi-private rooms, a wellness center, barber/beauty salon, computer lab and Wi-Fi access, housekeeping and laundry, in room cable TV, central bathing and spa on each floor, and a movie theater. The Maples will employ about 40 staff when the facility is fully operational.

“This project represents an important place making investment for the City of Fulton and all of Oswego County at a time when such facilities are in critical need,” said Sara Broadwell, executive director of the GOFCC. “This is a growing community, and the success of The Maples exemplifies how collaboration is driving impact in our community. CenterState CEO and the Greater Oswego Fulton Chamber of Commerce were happy to provide strategic support, leveraging resources and sharing expertise. We are excited to celebrate the grand opening with our community and look forward to continuing to support this business.”

Avery and Dr. Stevens made note of the community support they received along the way, specifically from Pathfinder Bank and County of Oswego IDA who without their help The Maples “wouldn’t have been possible.”

“The County of Oswego IDA welcomed the opportunity to work together with Pathfinder Bank to provide financial assistance to the Maples Assisted Living Community,” said Austin Wheelock, CEO of the IDA. “The multi-million dollar investment by co-owners Atom Avery and Dr. Michael Stephens to transform a vacant building into a much needed 89 bed assisted living facility will help to revitalize the local neighborhood, create new jobs, and improve quality of life for the residents of the City of Fulton.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was jointly supported by the Great Oswego Fulton Chamber of Commerce and the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency. Guests were invited to tour the facility, meet the staff, and explore the various services available.

“Today’s ceremony marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing amazing care and support for our beloved community members here in the City of Fulton,” said Dr. Stephens. “The Maples isn’t just about providing a place to live; it’s a community project intended to nurture an environment where individuals can thrive and find comfort in knowing that they’re in capable hands.”
