Bivens started her career in medical billing more than 35 years ago and provided insight into the uniqueness of hospital billing, Medicare guidelines, and HIPAA regulations.

As a supervisor of a staff of 24, Bivens helped the students understand what a career in medical billing entails and what is expected of employees in the field.

She explained the importance of building relationships with patients and insurance facilities and urged students to keep abreast with current regulations regarding healthcare.

“Healthcare is changing quickly. What you learn today is the basis for what you will learn tomorrow,” Bivens said.

Oswego County BOCES’ Medical Billing class is offered evenings at the Mexico campus and teaches students the basics of medical billing including understanding medical coding and regulations along with reading, translating and submitting medical related documents.

Upon completion of the 105-hour class, students receive a certificate and are prepared for employment at a healthcare facility or a dental or medical office.
