HANNIBAL – With a focus on the future, eighth graders at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School recently got a glimpse into what life is like at the high school.
Dozens of soon-to-be freshmen and their parents gathered in the high school auditorium during Transition Night, where teachers, administrators and staff members were on hand to answer questions.
Attendees browsed through the course catalog, reviewed graduation requirements and learned about daily life at the high school.
“We’re extremely happy to have you as our students next year,” said high school Principal Stephen Dunn. “We’ll help you learn and grown over the next four years, and you’ll get out of it what you put into it.”
After outlining some of the extracurricular activities, high school counselor Brooke Fingland reiterated the importance of effort and hard work.
“There’s no such thing as social promotion,” she said. “You have to earn your credits. Develop good study habits and find what works best for you.”
In addition to offering advice and tips to the incoming freshmen, discussion turned to some of the resources that are available at the high school.
Teachers are available to provide extra help for students who are struggling, and there is also a new tutoring room where students can receive one-on-one help.
“Some kids are advocates for themselves, but we are also very proactive,” Dunn said. “If we see somebody slipping, we’re going to grab them. We have a lot of tools at our disposal and we’re going to utilize them.”
Additional information will be available and events will be held in the coming months to ensure a seamless transition from middle school to high school, Dunn said.
