Oswego, NY – Oswego High School graduate Chelsea Johnson, of Oswego, has been named the recipient of the 2010 Elmer G. Hadlow Memorial Music Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an Oswego High School Student who pursues an education and/or career in music.

The $500 annual scholarship was established in 2005, upon the passing of Elmer G. Hadlow, a longtime resident of Oswego, and strong advocate of music in the Oswego community. Hadlow sang for more than 50 years in church choirs, barbershop quartets and choruses throughout Oswego County and Central New York.

Rachael Himes was the recipient of the award last year.

“We’re extremely pleased to recognize Chelsea for her musical accomplishments at the Oswego High School and within the community,” said Hadlow family members. “We look forward to hearing of her future endeavors in the music field and her pursuits of ultimately teaching music.”

“Our father had a passion for music and he would be very proud to know someone as talented as Chelsea was the recipient of an award in his honor,” the family added. “We are proud to be able to carry on our father’s legacy with this $500 scholarship to talented music students at the Oswego High School.

Chelsea, the daughter of Barney and Michelle Johnson of Oswego, plans to study Music Education at Spring Arbor University in Michigan and hopes to someday become a high school vocal teacher.

Johnson has been very active in the music programs offered in the Oswego City School district. As early as third grade she was singing in the chorus. She also participated in orchestra from third grade until her senior year in high school.  Johnson was also active in the Oswego Children’s Theater, Oswego Player’s Theater, all four high school musicals, Young Life, and as Vacation Bible School volunteer.
