Pat Pauly, guest curator of the Tyler Art Gallery exhibition “A Personal Landscape: Contemporary Art Quilts,” will discuss “Celebrating the Art Quilt” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 in the SUNY Oswego gallery.

In the free presentation, the exhibition designer and contemporary quilt maker will introduce the exhibition, which features work by 19 upstate New York artists.

Pauly will also give a College Hour presentation on the exhibition at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Each work in the exhibition reflects nature imagery with a different voice, from the literal landscape to abstract interpretations.

Pauly has been professionally involved with museums since 1980. “What is most fascinating about this collection of quilts is that they’ve transcended the limits of traditional quilting and succeeded in depicting the landscape through personal reflection,” Pauly said.

Pauly curated the Genesee Country Village and Museum’s “Quilts Uncovered: Treasures from the Genesee Country Village and Museum,” in 2004-05. She is a member of the Studio Art Quilt Association, and actively involved in promoting and encouraging the studio art quilter. Pauly also regularly lectures and teaches on studio art quilts.

Artists included in the exhibition, as well as highlighted in Pauly’s lecture, include Aafke Swart Steenhuis, Caren Betlinski, Patricia Mattison, Mary Diamond, Jeanne Raffer Beck, Marcia DeCamp, Linda Bachman, Janet Ozard Root, Judith Plotner, Nancy Davis Murty, Beth Brandkamp, Ren Vasiliev, Sally Dutko, Patricia G. Faulkner, Melissa Craven Fowler, Nancy P. Hicks, Holly Knott and Jeanne Simpson.

“A Personal Landscape” will run from Sept. 5 to Oct. 19 at Tyler Art Gallery, concurrent with two other exhibitions: “Eco-Tankers: Exhibition by Bruce Conkle” and “Rocks and Rills: Nature Themes from the Permanent Collection.” A public reception for all three exhibitions will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 5.

During exhibitions, SUNY Oswego’s Tyler Art Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. weekends. All gallery events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the gallery at 312-2113.
