Local Eateries Support ‘Stone Soup’ Luncheon

OSWEGO, NY – Local eateries, restaurants and food stores throughout Oswego County are doing their part to help make this year’s Annual United Way Stone Soup Luncheon the best ever.

Scheduled for Thursday, the luncheon, which is open to the public, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Parish Center on West First Street.

The event serves as a fundraiser to help stock the shelves of food pantries throughout Oswego County.

“Our Annual Stone Soup Luncheon is a reflection of the United Way’s ‘Live United’ concept,” said Resource Development Director for the United Way of Greater Oswego County, Lois Luber. “We are all connected. When you reach out and help someone in need that action has an effect that reverberates throughout the community. By supporting the United Way you not only bring comfort to those in need, you help inspire others to lend their support and ultimately enable us and our member agencies to serve even more families and individuals.”

“Thanks to the support we’ve received from area businesses, such as Canale’s Restaurant and Vona’s Restaurant who have supported us for the past five years, and the efforts of our wonderful planning committee, chaired by Jim Mahoney, attendees can look forward to enjoying a delicious luncheon with their friends and neighbors, and helping to feed those in need in our community,” she added.

For a $5 donation, attendees will enjoy a tasty lunch featuring delicious homemade Italian Wedding soup from Vona’s Restaurant as well as soups from Canale’s Restaurant, and the American Foundry, salad courtesy of C’s Farms, fresh baked rolls from Bosco & Geers, desserts from Cakes Galore and SUNY Oswego Auxiliary Services and fresh brewed hot coffee from Tim Horton’s.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to food pantries throughout Oswego County to help them meet the increased demand for food subsidy this holiday season and beyond.

Nick Canale Jr. of Canale’s Restaurant, a long time supporter of the United Way, is happy to be a part of the luncheon and is looking forward to the event.

“The United Way’s holiday luncheon is a great way for the community to come together and support the United Way’s efforts at this important time of the year. Giving to the United Way is a great way to have an impact on numerous programs that serve those in need right here in Oswego County.”

Committee chair and United Way board member Mahoney echoed those thoughts.

“With the increased demand that our food pantries will be facing this holiday season we are hoping that our holiday luncheon will help them meet that demand,” said Mahoney. “In addition to the $5 donation we are asking attendees to please bring non-perishable food items that we can give to the food pantries as well so that the food pantries can keep their shelves stocked throughout the holidays.”

The luncheon will also feature plenty of great door prizes donated from area businesses including $25 gift cards from Key Bank and a number of gift certificates.
