MAM Students Begin 1 School, 1 Book Initiative

Michael A. Maroun Elementary students look on as Principal Brett Doody kicks off the One School, One Book initiative wearing a dragon costume at an assembly

PHOENIX, NY – Book characters recently came to life during a recent assembly at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School as a schoolwide reading initiative got underway.

The effort is part of a national campaign called One School, One Book, which aims to promote reading among the entire student population. A committee of MAM teachers has planned several literacy activities during the upcoming weeks, and each student received a copy of the book, “Kenny and the Dragon” to read at home as a family. At school, students will delve into the novel with their classmates.

“We have several book-related activities and different character-specific things planned to make this a big event for the students,” said MAM Assistant Principal Stephanie Critelli-Locke. “We’ll be doing a scavenger hunt, a coloring contest, and different activities in the regular classroom and in physical education, music and art classes as well.”
