To the Fulton Community,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new volunteer manager for the Fulton School Mentoring Program.
I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of this program.
I can remember a special adult who made a difference in my life, my sixth grade teacher.
I was able to talk to him and know that he was listening and this relationship went on during my high school career and I truly believe he is one adult who made a positive difference in my life.
Studies on Mentoring Programs have shown that students with mentors have been more likely to stay in school, resist temptation of drugs and alcohol, become involved in community service, enroll in college, and feel more hopeful for their future.
However, more important than all of that is that mentoring helps youth be able to be in a positive, caring relationship that helps them build achievement and character.
Mentoring can make a difference in who they are, what they believe and what they can achieve.
Youth today are faced with obstacles all around them; they may seem lost, unwanted, unloved and have nowhere to turn. That is where YOU can make a difference!
A mentoring relationship gives youth a way out, it gives them the chance for someone to sit and listen, play a game, draw a picture, go for a walk and many other things.
Mentoring gives youth hope.
The Fulton School Mentoring Program works with youth for one hour after school each week and four times in the summer.
I know one hour may seem like a lot, but don’t we make sure we watch our favorite television show every week? Don’t we make time for that trip to the mall? Once we schedule it, the hour becomes part of our week. It becomes our routine, it becomes the norm.
I ask that you think about becoming a volunteer mentor.
Can you listen to a child? Are you willing to set aside one hour each week between 3:30-5:30 to meet with a child in an after school setting? More importantly, can you make a difference in a child’s life?
We need you to help make that difference, we cannot do this alone.
This is a great opportunity and I ask that you truly think about getting involved and becoming a mentor!
