Mexico, N.Y. – The Town and Village of Mexico want to hear residents’ thoughts and ideas about how to support and protect agricultural activities and farmland in Mexico. The information gathered will help shape the vision and goals for the Town and Village of Mexico Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan. Community members can participate in the survey by visiting the project website at www.mexicony.org. The survey will close on March 24, 2025.
The Town and Village of Mexico have undertaken an effort to develop an Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan through a grant from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets’ Municipal Farmland Protection Plan program. The project is being led by the Town and Village with guidance from a volunteer Advisory Committee. The planning process will be facilitated with technical assistance from a consultant team led by Community Planning and Environmental Associates.
“Our community’s agricultural roots and history is core to our identity and future as a Town and Village,” said Committee Member Marcia DeLong. “The launch of the community survey is a crucial step in developing the Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan. We encourage everyone to participate in the survey to ensure that our plan reflects the needs and aspirations of all residents. We look forward to connecting with farmers in the next phase of engagement.”
The Town and Village are also working to develop a new Comprehensive Plan. The Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan will, when completed, be adopted as an addenda to that Plan. Together they will provide a vision and roadmap for the community and offer goals, strategies and actions needed to achieve Mexico’s vision. The Town and Village will be guided by these plans when making development decisions that will address current and future needs of the area.
Public outreach and engagement is a key component of the project and fundamental to the implementation and success of the plan. We hope everyone will take 10 minutes to fill out the Ag Survey. Residents of the town and village of Mexico are encouraged to visit www.mexicony.org to take the survey and share their thoughts and ideas.
