Military Appreciation Celebration To Honor Native American Veterans From Onondaga Nation

Oswego, NY – Thank a Service Member with support from National Grid, University College of Syracuse University, and businesses throughout the Central New York community have partnered together for a Military Appreciation Celebration honoring Native American Veterans from the Onondaga Nation, to be held at 10 a. m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Onondaga Nation Arena, 326 Route 11, Nedrow, NY.

The event will include a variety of special guest speakers, refreshments, and a special veterans recognition ceremony. Speakers include Major Andy Pannier from the United States Military Academy at West Point and Chief Irving Powless Jr, Chief of the Onondaga Nation.

“It’s been an honor to work with local sponsors, community volunteers, and representatives from the Onondaga Nation,” said Peter Allen, executive director of Thank

A Service Member, the Central New York-based non-profit organization that organized the event. “We are grateful for their support and look forward to continued collaboration on projects to recognize veterans across New York State.”

“National Grid is grateful for Thank A Service Member and the successful partnership with the company’s Native American Indian and Veterans Employee Resource groups,” said Melanie Littlejohn, National Grid Director of Community and Customer Management for Central New York. “We are honored to be a part of this special tribute and recognize all Native Americans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.”

“Syracuse University has a long and proud tradition of supporting veterans, from its historic role educating the post-World War II generation under the original GI Bill to its commitment to post-9/11 service men and women,” said Bethaida González, dean of University College at Syracuse University. “As the enrollment of veterans and military personnel continues to rise at SU, we are proud to offer them our support and to partner with Thank a Service Member to recognize their service to our country.”
In addition to National Grid, and Syracuse University, event sponsors include: Xpress Auto Care, Green Hills Market, Onondaga Nation Health Center, Step One Creative, Pathfinder Bank, Oswego County Federal Credit Union, Fulton Savings Bank, and Habitat for Humanity.
