More Than 50 Grb Students Earn National Career Readiness Credentials

FULTON – More than fifty students at Fulton’s GRB High School recently earned their ACT WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate, demonstrating the skills and knowledge essential for the modern workplace. This nationally recognized program is well-regarded in over 30 US states but is only beginning to take root in New York.

At a special ceremony on January 22, the 56 honorees were recognized for their newfound credentials. Angela Ferlito – the school’s Work-Based Learning Coordinator – hosted the event, explaining the impressive efforts of the GRB students.

The certification process is a lengthy one that measures and improves on students’ skills. The ACT WorkKeys placement test originally assesses students in the areas of applied math, graphic literacy, and workplace documents. Students are then given access to the online ACT WorkKeys curriculum where they can complete lessons and improve their initial scores before a final assessment at school. In addition to their Career Readiness certification – which demonstrates exceptional skill to future employers – students scoring with Silver, Gold, and Platinum designation may be able to receive up to six college credits for their efforts.

“ACT WorkKeys is a tool that assists our students in acquiring essential career-related skills that are critical to success in any workplace in any career field,” explained Ferlito. “My hope is that more and more New York State employers will recognize the value of the NCRC credential in their hiring practices as they already do in over 30 other states.”

The ACT WorkKeys program began in the fall of 2019 as part of the ACT/Oswego County Work Ready Initiative. Then as now, Oswego County was the only region in NYS to offer the prestigious program in a collaboration between GRB, Cayuga Community College, and CiTi BOCES.
