New Workshop To Focus On Families

FULTON, NY- Parents, as well as their teenage children, will soon be able to take advantage of a new workshop to be offered through Catholic Charities of Oswego County’s Parent Education Program.

The program, Families in Action, is designed to benefit both parents and their teenagers by learning to interact more effectively and create a stronger bond by better understanding each other’s needs.

“We are excited to be adding this new workshop to our program,” said program supervisor Andrea Burritt. “Our current programs focus on developing overall parenting skills and are available for parents and guardians who are responsible for children from newborns to teenagers. This is the first program we offer that is for both the parents and their teenage children.  We are encouraging teenagers to attend this workshop with their parents as the workshop is designed to educate them as well and welcomes their input.”

According to Burritt, the Families in Action Workshop will teach parents and teenagers useful skills that will help them in many aspects of their lives.

“Parents will learn the skills needed to guide their children through the challenging teen years and teens will learn communication and negotiation techniques that they will be able to use at home, at school, and throughout their lives,” she said.

Topics to be addressed during the workshop include:

Skills that promote effective communication and social interaction
Concrete strategies to prevent risky behavior
How to be an encouraging parent and a responsible teenager

The workshop, which is open to the public and free of charge, will offered Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Catholic Charities of Oswego County, 365 W. First St.

The workshop will begin July 23 and continue through Aug. 27.

Parent educators Cindy Morabito and Ellen Donovan will facilitate the workshop.

Those interested in attending the workshop are encouraged to do early, as space is limited.
