News Channel 9 Meteorologist Thornton visits HCSD sixth graders

Meteorologist Kate Thornton visited Hannibal Central School District on Wednesday, teaching the sixth graders about weather and the study of it.

HANNIBAL, NY – A special forecast with a 100% chance of learning took place at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School when meteorologist Kate Thornton rolled through Hannibal this week.

Thornton, who is a meteorologist on 9-WSYR in Syracuse, explored weather with the entire Hannibal Central School District sixth grade on Wednesday, and included several experiments and Doppler examples for hands-on learning.

She explained that high pressure systems are generally responsible for good weather, while low pressure systems bring stormy weather. Thornton also created her own storm cloud in a jar to show students a typical water cycle.

Thornton encouraged students who are passionate about weather to explore it as a career, noting that she was about their age living in the Hudson Valley when a tornado warning one evening sparked her passion in the science.
