It was a perfect day for a picnic.
Students at the Charles E. Riley Elementary School celebrated the start of a new school year with a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support picnic hosted by the home and school association.
Some students sat with their classmates outside under the sun as they had trays packed with a variety of food while others packed the cafeteria.
Principal Randy Richards said, “This is a feel good day, but it is also a coming together day as we are teaching social skills to our students.â€Â
Students stood patiently in line and made wise decisions over what nutritious foods they were going to enjoy.
The lunch of hot dogs, hamburgers, watermelon, corn on the cob, watermelon slices, pickles and healthy snacks was the highlight of the day for the students.
However, Richards noted that this was just one event of the day. He said,†This was an entire day activity. Students learned how to go to the bathroom, walk in the halls, learn about our noise zones, and when to whisper and when to talk. They also learned how to stand in line and be patient which are some of the things that we have to teach in school today.â€Â
It was noted that this PBIS effort was a wonderful training component.
Richard was excited because, “The biggest bang is that you have students and faculty coming together. They are coming together for a common purpose, putting standards in place and the interaction between both is phenomenal.â€Â
The principal could not thank the Charles E. Riley Home and School enough for its contribution to a very special day. He said, “Home and school is always there when we need them and this is the second year they have rallied behind this. There is such a positive vibe and along with the financial support there are at least 15 volunteers helping out here today.â€Â
