North Country Library System Receives $16,000 To Expand Digital Collection

The North Country Library System is adding hundreds of new e-books and audiobooks to their digital collection this year, thanks to $16,000 in special legislative aid from Assemblyman Will Barclay.
Most of the funds will be used to purchase additional copies of high-demand titles, as well as audio versions of traditional and modern classics for all ages. Some funds will be used to purchase titles that support school readiness and healthy habits for young children. The remaining funds will be used to establish a Spanish language collection, a French language collection, and a poetry collection.
“Our public libraries are among the most important assets in every community,” says Assemblyman Barclay. “Investing in these institutions is essential for their future, and for the countless visitors who benefit from the programs, services and resources they provide. I’m proud to partner with the North Country Library System and applaud their efforts to keep building on the collections, access and experiences available to the public.”
The North Country Library System launched its digital collection in 2011. Since that time, e-books have become a crucial part of library service, allowing readers who cannot visit the library in person to borrow books from wherever they are by downloading them through a free app called Libby.
E-books are also a way for libraries to serve readers with specialized needs. In the Libby app, any reader can increase text size or turn on a special dyslexia font designed to improve readability. Libby also works with screen readers, assistive technology that reads the text that is displayed on a computer screen aloud for people who are blind or visually impaired.
NCLS Executive Director Paulette Roes says, “We’re deeply grateful to Assembly Leader Barclay for his generous investment in our digital collection. This support will have an immediate, meaningful impact by expanding access to readers of all ages across our entire region.”
Anyone with a card from a public library in Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, or St. Lawrence counties can borrow e-books and audiobooks from North Country Library System. You can browse the collection at https://northcountrylibraries.overdrive.com or through the Libby app.
