OCO’s Meals On Wheels Program Available To Area Seniors And More

FULTON, NY – For many homebound people living throughout Oswego County the Home Delivered Meals – or “Meals on Wheels” program of Oswego County Opportunities’ Senior Nutrition Services is their source for nutritious hot meals.

Established in 1974, OCO’s Meals on Wheels program currently serves more than 600 homebound individuals throughout Oswego County.

While that is a substantial number, OCO Senior Nutrition Services program coordinator Trinity Engle wants to ensure that OCO’s Meals on Wheels program is serving all of the people in the county who need the meal service.

“Our Meals on Wheels program provides a vital service to not only seniors, but anyone in Oswego County who may be homebound. For many it is their only opportunity to enjoy a hot meal. Each meal is nutritionally balanced and specially prepared and packaged in our kitchen in Mexico. For those under 60 the program is convenient if they have recently returned home from the hospital or are undergoing rehabilitation from an injury or operation and have found themselves in a homebound situation. But more importantly, our Meals on Wheels program offers more than a just a meal. Our delivery people provide a daily check on the recipients well being. If any of our participants are unaccounted for we become concerned for their safety and call their emergency contact,” explained Engle.

The program is made possible to those 60 and older for a small contribution of $4 per day to residents of Oswego County.

The Meals on Wheels program is supported by the Oswego County Legislature and Office for the Aging so that no one who is 60 or older is turned away for their inability to pay.

Meals are available Monday through Friday and are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Those under 60 that would like to access the program can do so for only $9 per day.

In some cases, financial assistance is available to offset the cost to our clients younger than 60 years of age thanks to a grant awarded from OCO’s Bowl a Fun Fund.

“I encourage everyone that is homebound, or that know someone who is homebound, that may be interested in our Meals on Wheels program to contact us today to find out how it can benefit them,” added Engle.
