OCO Teams With Hair Salons To Promote Free Cancer Screenings

FULTON, NY – Oswego County Opportunities’ Cancer Services Program Partnership is inviting hair salons throughout Oswego County to join them in their effort to raise breast cancer awareness and the free cancer screenings that are available through the program.

“With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month it is the perfect time to spread the word and encourage people to get the cancer screenings they need,” said program coordinator Carolyn Handville.

According to the American Cancer Society, in Oswego County 13 individuals are diagnosed with cancer every week and 5 individuals will lose their battle to cancer weekly. The Cancer Services Program Partnership of Oswego County, which is funded by the NYS Department of Health and Susan G. Koman for the Cure, provides free cancer screenings including clinical breast exams, mammograms, pap/pelvic exams and colorectal cancer screenings to men and women who are uninsured and 40 years of age and older.

Handville said the program is currently recruiting hair salons to lend their support to the fight against cancer by informing their clients and loved ones about OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership.

“As hair dressers serve on the front line making our community members feel better about themselves while hearing all of the good and all of the bad things going on in their life, we thought it would be a perfect opportunity to get our message to the community,” she said.

Throughout the month of October, OCO’s Cancer Services Program Partnership will provide participating hair salons with aprons to wear to promote the program along with tote bags to trigger the conversation.  Hair salons will also receive program cards to distribute to customers who inquire as well as free giveaways to hand out to all customers for helping to spread the word about free services and cancer screenings available through the program.

As an added incentive, representatives from the CSPP will visit the first 3 hair salons that sign on to help promote the program and provide snacks and refreshments to their customers and staff while scheduling eligible community members for their free cancer screenings.

“I encourage all Oswego County hair salons to join us in our fight against cancer and partner with us to improve the quality of life and create stronger, more successful communities. We do not want any man or woman delaying to complete their annual cancer screenings due to a lack of health insurance coverage.  Working together we can spread the word about this wonderful program and improve the overall wellness of our community,” added Handville.
