OCSD Advances Student Learning With Shineman Foundation Grants

OSWEGO – Thanks to the generosity of Richard S. Shineman Foundation, nearly 3,000 students across the Oswego City School District participated in hands-on science, engineering, field trip and experiential learning opportunities during the 2025-26 school year. The foundation awarded the district $12,500 through two grants: a $2,500 Science and Engineering Design Grant and a $10,000 Field Experience Grant.

Teacher on Special Assignment Michelle McManus worked with more than 70 classrooms and more than 1,400 students through the science grant, while the field experience grant supported learning opportunities for students in every elementary and middle school grade. Experiences included visits to the Oswego Fire Department, Fort Ontario, the Children’s Museum of Oswego and Constellation’s Nuclear Training Center, along with Cornell Cooperative Extension programs, STEAM engineering challenges, Indigenous history presentations and financial literacy experiences.

“The excitement students demonstrated during these lessons was incredible,” said McManus. “Students frequently told me, ‘I love science!’ and eagerly asked when I would be returning to their classrooms. These experiences helped students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills while making learning memorable and fun.”

The grants advanced the district’s mission to empower and engage students for successful futures while supporting its vision of equity and excellence through innovative, community-connected learning.
