Office for the Aging Partners with CiTi and RSVP on Home Repairs for Seniors

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Office for the Aging is partnering with the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation and RSVP to offer seniors a new handyman program this fall.

Sara Sunday, director of the Office for the Aging, said the idea came from a community needs assessment which the Office for the Aging conducts every four years.

“One of the results from the most recent assessment survey indicated that seniors want to remain in their home, but their home may need minor repairs. In addition, seniors do not know who to trust to perform the repairs,” said Sunday. “With no current programs or funding for this type of service, we looked for creative ways to address this need. We reached out to Garrett Weiss of the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation to see if they had any ideas.”

After an initial meeting in the spring, the Office for the Aging developed a partnership with CiTi construction technology students and RSVP volunteers to bring a new handyman program to the community this fall.

The Office for the Aging is now looking for homeowners, aged 60 or more, whose homes need minor repairs such as adding a stair railing, installing shower grab bars, replacing stair tread or other repairs.
