OSWEGO COUNTY – More than 200 older adults in Oswego County received gifts through Oswego County Office for the Aging’s (OFA) “Santa for Seniors” program. Seniors were nominated and adopted by community members and OFA staff delivered their presents in time for the holiday.
“We are thrilled to continue ‘Santa for Seniors’ this year,” said Oswego County OFA Director Sara Sunday. “The immense support the program has received from the community is amazing. Many of our participants will not receive any other gifts this year, so this is a great way to add joy to their holiday.”
Senior nomination forms included details about the person’s interests, hobbies, clothing sizes and suggested gifts they may want or need. Gifts typically consist of basic items such as blankets, socks, word search books, mugs and clothing.
“Nearly every nominated senior was adopted by an individual or organization, and supplemental gifts were sent along with main presents from the person’s wish list,” said Elizabeth Weimer, senior aging services specialist with Oswego County OFA and NY Connects. “People have been very generous this year; we’re so thankful to all of our adopters.”
Along with presents, each senior also received a holiday card. Participants who do not currently receive home-delivered meals – and are able to safely prepare meals at home – were also given a shelf-stable meal box.
“Another fun part of this program is that many of the seniors who let us know that they have pets, also received presents for them as well,” Weimer added. “It’s so heartwarming to see our older adults sharing their joy with their furry companions!”
OFA and NY Connects of Oswego County first organized the “Santa for Seniors” program in 2018. Their aim is to help brighten the holiday season for older adults around the county who may not have family or family support and have limited financial resources.
