Oswego ‘Battle Of The Books’ Proves Exciting

OSWEGO, NY – On April 7 when the Oswego County “Battle of the Book’s takes the stage in Phoenix there will be six Oswego City School District elementary students participating.

On March 16, the Minetto Elementary School hosted the Oswego City School District “Battle of the Books.”

Kingsford Park Elementary School earned the third and fourth grade crown with the efforts of Claudia Chetney, Anna Langlois and Madison Bullard.

Charles E. Riley Elementary School will represent Oswego in the fifth and sixth grade division as Sarah Smolinski, Sarah Fitzgibbons and Hailey Giocondo earned the highest number of points to finish first.

Every elementary school in the district was represented in a very competitive evening.

The third and fourth grade competition saw a four-way tie for second place while the intermediate division was forced into overtime before a winner was crowned.

Students read a variety of books and were asked questions that had specific answers.

Representing Fitzhugh Park Elementary School were third and fourth graders Monique Jones, Katie Smith and Skylar Trapasso while the fifth and sixth grades were represented by Amber Cavellier, Brooke Farnsworth and Kelly Skinner.

Frederick Leighton Elementary School teams included third and fourth graders Ronald Baker, Neel Tripathi and Isaiah Wiseman and intermediate age students Hannah Brown, Jake Gerber and Chase Pelton.

The Minetto primary team included Kaleya Dawley, Tiffany Ditton and Jessica Godden as well as the intermediate team of Laura Godden, Rachel Godden and Riley Jaquin.

The KPS intermediate team included Michael Beckwith, Collin Morrison and Isabel O’Brien while the Charles E. Riley primary team included Grace Hibbert, Maxwell Mays and Leanna Restani.

The judges for the Oswego City School District round of the “Battle of the Books” included Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist, Minetto Elementary Principal Dean Goewey and OCSD Director of Literacy Laura Ryder.
