“All our employees and board are delighted to be recognized by this award,” Carhart said. Community involvement and community service are among our highest goals at OCFCU and it’s really special to have our efforts recognized by our peers.”

According to CUANY’s web site, the Dora Maxwell award honors credit unions that have successfully participated in or led community activities. It recognizes credit union efforts to strengthen local institutions and materially improve the lives of non-member through community outreach program other than personal finance education.

Among OCFCU’s community involvement was: their sponsorship of free Movies In the Park in Oswego; the Jazz and Blues Park at Oswego’s Harborfest; Christmas in Mexico; the 5k Run For Dennis supporting bladder cancer research; bicycle safety at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station’s annual Safety, Health and Wellness Fair; the CNY Pumpkinfest;  and Oswego County Make-A-Wish. The Credit Union has also help support numerous fundraisers and other community events.

OCFCU opened a new Oswego office in January 2013 on the corner of E. 4th and Bridge St. It replaced its former E. 7th St. location and is more than twice its size. In Dec. 2010, OCFCU opened a brand new office in Mexico at 5828 Scenic Ave. (Route 3) where they converted and renovated the village’s former railroad depot into a modern credit union, Carhart said. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The credit union’s third office is at 300 W. 1st St. in Oswego.

Founded in 1975, OCFCU is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative association, which serves more than 8,800 members from throughout Oswego County. OCFCU’s charter was revised in early 2007 so that anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Oswego County is eligible to join.
