OSWEGO COUNTY – Oswego County Office for the Aging (OFA) staff visited Granby resident Rosie Anthony to celebrate her 100th birthday earlier this month; bringing her birthday treats, a card and balloons. Rosie is the long-time owner of Rosie’s Tavern in Granby.
“We’re excited to welcome Rosie to our ‘100 Club’ and celebrate her on this milestone birthday,” said OFA Director Sara Sunday. “We love to celebrate our clients turning 100 years or older. We bring them a small birthday treat and recognize them on our Facebook page, if they are interested and willing.”
Rosie was born in Camillus, N.Y. on Feb. 9, 1926. She grew up in Solvay, N.Y., and in 1967, relocated to the town of Granby and opened Rosie’s Tavern. She has operated the business ever since, at times running it completely on her own. She currently has just one staff member who works two nights a week, while Rosie handles the other four days the tavern is open.
She also served on the Granby Town Council for 15 years and especially enjoyed her work with children and seniors. During her time on the council, she played a pivotal role in lowering the town’s tax rate.
Another accomplishment Rosie is proud of is raising her great niece as her own child. When Rosie’s nephew came to her looking for help with his nine-month-old daughter, she didn’t hesitate to take care of the baby, despite being 50 years old at the time and running a business.
Seniors who do not participate in OFA programs but are turning 100 years of age or older are also welcome to be recognized by the agency on its Facebook page and with a birthday card in the mail.
If you know a senior celebrating their 100th (or older) birthday and would like them to be recognized, contact OFA at 315-349-3484. Loved ones should submit the senior’s information and photo with their consent.
