Oswego County Expands Parenting Resources at All County Libraries

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance and the Oswego County Youth Bureau have partnered to expand parental resources to families in local communities. Fifty new books on parenting and early childhood development were purchased and donated to every public library in the county.

Doreen Bergman, director of the Fulton Public Library, welcomed the new additions and highlighted its value to local families.

“The Fulton Public Library is deeply grateful to the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance and the Oswego County Youth Bureau for their generous donation of 50 books to our parenting center,” said Bergman. “These up-to-date resources will be instrumental in empowering our families with the reliable knowledge, tools and guidance they need to support their children’s development. We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with the Alliance and look forward to continuing our shared work to help local families thrive.”

The additional texts provide caregivers with information, guidance and support on a wide range of topics including raising a child with autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Down’s syndrome, or vision or hearing impairment. Navigating fertility issues, the loss of a child, parenting for dads or adults with ADHD, breaking cycles of generational trauma and many other issues of parenting and early childhood development are also covered.

In addition to the new books, each library also has information about Oswego County Help Me Grow’s free developmental screening tools, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires® (ASQ-3) and Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ). These surveys help caregivers learn more about their child’s development in areas such as communication, fine and gross motor skills, personal-social skills, problem-solving and social-emotional development.

Caregivers of children aged 2 months through 5.5 years can use the QR code displayed at each library with the accompanying instructions to complete a questionnaire at no cost. Within one to two business days of completion, Oswego County Help Me Grow will reach out to the caregiver to review the results and provide additional resources, activities and support tailored to the child’s developmental needs.

The collaboration between the Oswego County Early Childhood Alliance, Oswego County Help Me Grow, Oswego County Youth Bureau and the county’s 11 public libraries reflects a shared commitment to supporting families by connecting them with resources in familiar, accessible community spaces.

Whether caregivers are looking for guidance on a specific parenting challenge, learning about a child’s developmental milestones, or simply looking for reassurance or new ideas, these library collections offer a place to begin.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to check out the collections available at libraries in Central Square, Fulton, Hannibal, Mexico, Oswego, Pulaski, Phoenix, Parish, Williamstown, Orwell-Cogswell and Sandy Creek.
