OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health provided free bone density screenings one morning during the New York State Fair in conjunction with Kinney Drugs.
Oswego Health’s Manager of Imaging Services Kevin Kane screened more than 70 individuals, mostly women.
Of the individuals who underwent the noninvasive test, 11 were found to have osteopenia, and another eight had osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a progressive disease that causes bones to become thin and brittle, making them more likely to break.
The debilitating effects of spinal fractures and their underlying cause, osteoporosis, are both preventable and treatable.
Osteopenia is generally considered the first step along the road to osteoporosis.
Kain recommended to those who learned they were at risk for osteoporosis, or osteopenia that they see their physician and to inquire about undergoing a dexastudy, which checks both the spine and hip for bone density.
While any bone can be affected by osteoporosis, the bones in the hip, spine and wrist are most at risk.
Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF).
