Oswego High School Senior Miles Bandla Named 2025 Recipient of David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship

Oswego, New York – Oswego High School Senior Miles Bandla has been awarded the 2025 David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship, recognizing his exceptional dedication to music and outstanding contributions to the OHS music program. The $1,000 scholarship supports local students who plan to continue their education in music.

“We are proud to recognize Miles as this year’s recipient of the David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship,” said Jill Sterio, wife of the late David Sterio. “Miles’ passion, performance history, and future plans in the field of music reflect the same spirit and commitment that David was known for throughout his life. We are grateful to all who have contributed to this scholarship fund to keep David’s musical legacy alive in the Oswego community and beyond.”

Bandla, the son of T.J. and Michelle Bandla, has immersed himself in music throughout his time at Oswego High School –performing in the Chamber Singers honor choir, Wind Ensemble, and marching band, while also showcasing his vocal and instrumental talent on the OHS stage in productions such as Guys and Dolls. He has earned state and regional honors, including selection to the NYSSMA Conference All-State Mixed Chorus in both 2023 and 2024, and the 2025 NAFME All-Eastern Mixed Chorus.

“Music has always been a part of my life,” said Bandla. “From watching my father perform in the city band to stepping on stage myself, I’ve only grown deeper in my love for it. I remember hearing Mr. Sterio play at the summer concerts – I was in awe of his talent and presence. To now be a part of his legacy is an incredible honor.”

Bandla plans to attend SUNY Fredonia this fall to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Music, with the goal of becoming a music librarian – a career path that merges his passion for music with academic and archival interests.

David A. Sterio Memorial Music Scholarship, Inc. a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, was established to honor the life and legacy of David Sterio, a lifelong musician and dedicated advocate for the arts in Oswego County, who passed away suddenly in August 2023. A graduate of Ithaca College in Music Education and Performance, David served as President of the Musicians’ Union of Oswego County and was widely admired for his clarinet and saxophone performances in numerous local ensembles, and continuing his father’s legacy in the Nick Sterio Orchestra. His love for music, community, and education lives on through this annual scholarship.

Last year’s inaugural scholarship recipient was Gabriel Cook, who is now attending the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
