OSWEGO, NY – Minetto and Charles E. Riley students advanced to Oswego County Battle of the Books final round as students competed recently for the right to move on.

The Battle of the Books competition began at the various elementary schools with one team from each advancing to the next round at Frederick Leighton Elementary School on Wednesday.
The primary winning team represented Minetto Elementary School and included Nicholas Brown, Isabella Thorpe and Jack Dobbs while first place in the intermediate grades came from Charles E. Riley and included Sarah Fitzgibbons, Madison Plyler, and Sarah Smolinski.
Students read books written by a variety of children’s authors and panelists asked 16 questions relating to the reading material.
This year’s panelists included Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Cathleen Chamberlain and Oswego City School District Director of Literacy Laura Ryder.
At the primary level, third and fourth grade, Minetto won with 112 points and was followed by Kingsford Park 96, Charles E. Riley 80, Frederick Leighton 64 and Fitzhugh Park 48.

The intermediate team category, representing fifth and sixth grade, saw Charles E. Riley with 112 points, Kingsford Park with 96, Minetto 88, Fitzhugh Park 80 and Frederick Leighton 40.
Students worked diligently with assistance from their coaches to earn a berth in the district final round. Once again the district librarians coordinated the Battle of the Books.
This year’s teams included at the primary level Crissa Cabanlig, Evan Rodriguez and Gabrielle Dickens from Fitzhugh Park; Cecile Laundre and Hannah Rebello from Kingsford Park: Jea Adams, Abigail Hoffman and Sofia Loayza of Frederick Leighton, and Lauren DeVinny, Sophia Griffiths and Sofia Proano of Charles E. Riley.
The intermediate teams this year included Robin Huang, Ben DeFoe and Mikayla Trapasso from Fitzhugh Park; Claudia Chetney, Anna Langlois and Madison Bullard from Kingsford Park; Brandy Ermini, Desiree Myers and Neel Tripathi from Frederick Leighton and Arlo Olson, Danielle DelConte and Leah Mullen at Minetto.
The winning teams will compete in the county round on April 13 in Sandy Creek High School at 6 p.m.
