OSWEGO COUNTY – The Oswego County Traffic Safety Board assisted six schools in Oswego during National “Walk to School Day” on Oct. 7. The occasion serves as a pedestrian safety campaign to promote careful commuting habits and encourage healthy fitness.

“‘Walk to School Day’ is a reminder that the safety of our children begins long before they enter the classroom,” said Oswego City Mayor Robert Corradino. “When students walk together with families, teachers and community leaders, they learn healthy habits, build confidence and become more aware of how to navigate their neighborhoods safely. Events like this strengthen our commitment to improving pedestrian safety around our schools and ensuring that every child in Oswego can travel to and from school with confidence and care.”

Students began their walk at a planned starting point and finished at the front doors of their respective schools, including Fitzhugh Park Elementary, Kingsford Park Elementary, Leighton Elementary, Minetto Elementary, Charles E. Riley Elementary and Trinity Catholic School.

Emergency and community-based services were present throughout the walk to ensure safety during the event. Volunteers included the Oswego County Health Department, Oswego County STOP-DWI, Mayor Corradino and the Oswego Police Department.

Preliminary 2025 data shows Oswego County had 22 pedestrian crashes, one of which was fatal. Community and school events like the National “Walk to School Day” serve as the foundation for the younger generation’s safe traffic habits.

The Oswego County Traffic Safety Board collaborates on other initiatives with schools throughout the county, including presentations, activities and tabling at school events.
