When the call for help was issued from Harborfest in need of more volunteers to run the Port City’s four-day annual festival, Oz Roller Girls skated as fast as they could to assist.
Oz Roller Girls, Oswego County’s first all women’s flat track roller derby team, was formed in May by Oswego native Victoria Usherwood-Gailinas and her husband, Phil. One of Oz Roller Girls’ missions is to give back to the community they live in, and assist small businesses and other organizations in any way they can.
The roller derby team signed up to work the first two days of Harborfest selling the festival’s 50/50 raffle tickets. The derby girls will first work at the Oswego Farmers Market at 4:30 p.m., today (Thursday 9/22). Look for them on their skates and in their vibrant lime green and electric blue team colors. After the farmers market closes at 8 p.m., Oz Roller Girls will skate around the city, continuing to sell raffle tickets until 9 p.m.
Derby girls will also be out in full force from 1-9 p.m., Friday, continuing to sell 50/50 tickets for Harborfest. There is no set venue for Oz Roller Girls to sell the tickets, so keep your eye open for their lime green and blue colors and feel free to flag them down for some tickets. Harborfest’s annual 50/50 drawing will be held at 5 p.m., Sunday, at Breitbeck Park. Winner need not be present to collect their prize. This is the second major community event the roller derby team has participated in since its formation in May. They also skated in Oswego’s annual Fourth of July Parade.
Recruitment is also under way for Oz Roller Girls. Oswego County’s only team currently has roughly 28 skaters, but is also looking for more women to join the team, referees, volunteers and sponsors. For more information, visit the team’s website at www.ozrollergirls.com .
