Oz Roller Girls To Debut Derby On Saturday

OSWEGO, NY – The Oz Roller Girls will debut the fast-moving, physical sport of roller derby in the Port City on Saturday when they host the Crown City Royal Pains from Cortland at Crisafulli Rink.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., with the bout beginning at 6 p.m.

Oz and Crown City are among several new leagues in Upstate New York in their first year of playing the growing sport.

League founder Victoria Usherwood Gailinas and her husband, Phil, the team’s coach, saw potential for this outlet when she moved back to her native Oswego.

“We offer a fast-paced, family-friendly, exciting brand of entertainment that brings a mix of skill, speed, strength and teamwork,” said Gailinas. “We have women of many ages, backgrounds and walks of life who enjoy the physical challenge, the competition, the fun and being part of our roller derby family.”

As part of the organization’s commitment to give back to the community, part of the proceeds from the bout will benefit the local Veterans’ Administration Outreach Clinic.

Tickets are available at the door.
