By Buddy & Porky and the Oswego County Humane Society
Dear Porky & Buddy,
I hate to say this but it looks like my house is going to be foreclosed on and I have a dog and a cat and I really have no idea what I will do with them if that happens. Do you have any suggestions?
Carol
Dear Carol,
First of all thanks for thinking about this in advance before it becomes a crisis. It is much easier to deal with a problem like this if we all have some time to explore the possibilities.  It is important to plan ahead. Even though options in these cases are often not ideal, making an informed decision ahead of time is a much better than simply leaving your best friends behind in an abandoned home.
So here are some steps you can take now:
1.      Check with friends, family and neighbors to see if someone can provide temporary foster care for your pet until you get back on your feet. Agree to a specific time frame, and check on the pet regularly;
2.     If you are moving into a rental property, make sure pets are allowed and get permission in advanceâ€â€Âand in writing;
3.     If all else fails, contact your local animal shelter if there is one, or call us at the Humane Society (315) 207-1070, or contact a rescue group for the specific breed of your dog, and do this well in advance of your move. The Humane Society does not have a shelter but we sometimes have available foster care for surrendered animals and we can certainly assist with helping you find a new home for your pets. If a shelter or rescue group agrees to take in your pet, provide medical records, behavior information, and anything else that might assist that organization in finding your pet a new home.
We are sorry you are in financial difficulty, but we are also very pleased that you are being so responsible about your pets.
