In an open letter to the governor, the grangers point out that closing these vital sources of tourism would make an already bad situation even more difficult.
Dear Governor Paterson,
On March 13, 2010, the members of Oswego County Pomona Grange discussed the potential closing of several New York State Parks and Historic Sites in or near our county, including Fort Ontario, Sackets Harbor battlefield, and the beach at Selkirk.
As legislators for the Granges in Oswego County we felt that we should express our concern and opposition to this proposal.
A vote was taken by the members of the Oswego County Grange to oppose the closings and I, as master, was directed to notify you of our opposition.
Oswego County currently has an unemployment rate of 11.6% and is heavily dependent on the tourism industry.
The closing of these vital sources of tourism would make an already bad situation even more difficult.
We recognize the need to cut New York State’s budget, but these closings would increase unemployment and close dependent businesses.
As Grangers, we recognize the need to educate our children and provide them with healthy outdoor activities.
The closing of the sites would limit these opportunities for our citizens.
Therefore, we the members of Oswego County Pomona Grange request that the above New York State Parks not be closed.
