Porky and Buddy Pet Health – Legislative Update: Sales in Pet Stores

Porky and Buddy

Dear readers,
We have another job for you.

State Senator Michael Gianaris and Assembly member Linda Rosenthal are sponsoring legislation (A.6298/S.4234) that would prohibit the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores across the state.

This is huge.

New York has one of the nation’s highest concentrations of dog retailers.

There are an estimated 2,000 puppies for sale in pet stores throughout the state at any point in time.

The vast majority of those puppies come from large-scale commercial breeding facilities (puppy mills).

Pet stores offer them up to unsuspecting customers as healthy, high-quality puppies from responsible breeders.

With very few exceptions, responsible local breeders do not sell their puppies in pet stores.

Puppies born in commercial breeding facilities are prone to health and emotional defects; conditions that leave many families distraught, and sometimes financially stressed, after unknowingly buying a sick puppy from a seemingly safe pet store.

California and Maryland have already passed statewide bans on the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores.

New York now has the chance to do the same.

This is an important moment for New York’s pets and animal lovers.

Please speak up for this measure by contacting your Assembly member and Senator and ask them to support and pass this bill during the 2019 session.

In our area you can contact Senator Pattie Richie (District 49) at 315-342-2057 and Assembly members Will Barclay (District 120) at 315-598-5185 or Brian Manktelow (District 130) at 315-946-5166.

This is easy to do and way more effective than signing an online petition.

You just call the number, ask to speak to a staff member about pending legislation and tell him or her that you strongly support Assembly Bill 6298 and/or Senate Bill 4234 and that you hope the legislator does the same.

Thanks for doing your part!
