Every so often we ask you to get involved with a legislative issue in New York or at the federal level.
We know that many of you do because you share the responses (or sometimes non-responses).
So this column will tell you about some of our favorite resources for knowing what legislative or agency-related campaigns are out there and how you can help.
We rely on the ASPCA Advocacy Center at www.aspca.org/fight-cruelty/advocacy-center; the HSUS Action Center at www.humanesociety.org/action/; and the American Anti-Vivisection Society Take Action page at www.aavs.org/take-action/
We know there are other good resources on the internet for similar information.
We would love to hear from you about your experience with them.
Each of these organizations makes it easy for you to find the information you need to advocate for these important campaigns.
We know that laws don’t directly change people, but they do change the legal landscape eventually.
And they are important building blocks in our ongoing mission to make our corner of the world more humane.
But here’s the thing.
The one best step that you can take to have your opinion heard by your elected representative is to call her or him.
Mass emails generated by a large national organization are one thing and worth doing.
But you will most likely get a mass response.
Your voice on the phone is the voice of a voter, not just a random animal lover.
So we strongly encourage you to go that one extra step for animals.
It’s easy.
Just get the phone number from one of the websites above.
Make sure you have the bill number you are calling about.
Call during regular business hours.
Ask to speak to the staff person in charge of animal issues.
Tell that person who you are and that you are asking your representative to co-sponsor the bill.
No long-winded speeches are necessary.
You can do that if you want but a simple one sentence request is just as effective—trust us.
