MEXICO, NY — Volunteers and members of Project Healing Waters will teach the basic steps and techniques of fly fishing to disabled veterans in a series of classes starting Monday Oct. 5, at the Edick-Hamlink Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 369 on NYS Route 3. Classes will be held Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m.
These classes are free to qualified veterans. To enroll, contact Fred Kuepper, Oswego County and Mid-Atlantic regional coordinator for PHW at 963-4095, or e-mail [email protected] Vets are asked to bring a copy of their disability discharge or current disability status with them to the first class they attend.
All equipment, materials and refreshments will be provided, also at no charge. Vets will learn how to tie basic flies to use on local streams and rivers, how to identify insect life to match fly tying, how to set up equipment and learn to cast fly rods and line, fishing lore and techniques, and when permitted, go fishing locally.
PHW Fly Fishing also sponsors larger trips such as the one held on the Salmon River near Pulaski Sept. 18 through 20. PHW programs have been set up throughout the US and have been very beneficial as recreational therapy for veterans.
